Certainly most of recent movies have used a lot of special effects.
But not every one of movies that used special effects is successful.
I think special effects aren't important part of movie, just it seems like kind of dressing materials.
Of course it is true that special effects are very important part of Sci-fi movies, but even in Sci-fi movie it's not main parts of movies. ( Sometimes there's movie with just special effects ^^; )

The most important thing in movies is story.
No matter how fantastic special effects it has, it would be useless if the story were bad.
For example, the visual effects in the movie 'Ghost Rider' was amazing, but the story...
it was just so awful.

There're so many successful movies without helping of special effects.
Following movies are all Oscar-winning films.
"Schindler's list", "Forrest Gump", "Americal Beauty",
"Life is Beautiful", "A Beautiful Mind","Pianist"...
In these movies, the special effects's role just supported a main story.

It means the movie could be successful without special effects if we were moved by the story.
Therefore, the special effects in the movie is not a necessary condition but a sufficient condition.
